Tau Valentinus II

PATRIARCH JULES-BENOÎT DOINEL (1842–1902) // FOUNDER OF THE MODERN GNOSTIC RESTORATION & PRIMATE OF THE ÉGLISE GNOSTIQUE

Jules-Benoît Stanislas Doinel du Val-Michel (Tau Valentinus II) (December 8, 1842 – March 16, 1902) was a French archival historian, librarian, Freemason, and the foundational restorer of the sacramental Gnostic episcopate in modern times. Educated at the prestigious École des Chartes in Paris, Doinel served professionally as the Head Archivist for the department of Loiret in Orléans, where his deep research into medieval Cathar and Albigensian manuscripts catalyzed the 19th-century Neo-Gnostic revival.

In 1890, Doinel formally founded the Église Gnostique in Paris, inaugurating an unbroken succession of autocephalous Gnostic prelates. By reviving ancient sacramental rites such as the Consolamentum and establishing an egalitarian clergy that ordained women as Sophies and consecrated regional bishops, Doinel transformed historic Gnostic theology from an academic artifact into a living sacramental movement.

"La Gnose est la Science illuminative. Je confesse la doctrine de l’Émanation et le Salut par la Gnose."
("Gnosis is the illuminating Science. I confess the doctrine of Emanation and Salvation by Gnosis.")
Jules Doinel, Catéchèse gnostique de l'Église Gnostique (1890)

The Orléans Vision & The 1890 Restoration

The genesis of the modern Gnostic episcopate emerged from a series of visionary theurgical experiences occurring in the private oratory of Lady Caithness (Marie, Duchess of Medina Pomar), a prominent patroness of the occult revival and the French branch of the Theosophical Society:

  • The Spiritual Mandate (Autumn 1889): During esoteric gatherings at the salon of Lady Caithness in Paris, Doinel participated in spiritistic communications wherein the discarnate assembly of ancient Gnostic masters, led by Valentinus of Alexandria, instructed him to restore the primitive Christian Gnosis and revive the episcopal assembly of the Holy Pleroma.
  • Spiritual Consecration (1890): On the feast day of the Ascension in 1890, Doinel received a visionary consecration to the episcopate from the celestial Aeons, assuming the patriarchal nomen Tau Valentinus II. He subsequently constituted the Holy Synod of the Église Gnostique, declaring the modern restoration of the Church of the Paraclete.
  • Masonic Milieu & Martinist Alliance: An active Freemason within the Grand Orient de France (Lodge Les Émules de Montyon) and an early member of the Supreme Council of the Ordre Martiniste led by Papus (Dr. Gérard Encausse), Doinel firmly embedded the restored Gnostic Church into the intellectual and esoteric vanguard of fin-de-siècle France.
  • Liturgical Codification: Doinel instituted a classical sacramental structure based on ancient Syrian and Cathar liturgical models, reviving the solemn distribution of the Sacred Bread (Pain Agapique), the baptism of the Holy Spirit, and the sacred investiture of bishops and deaconesses.

Tactile Lineage Sequence (Doinel to Tau Cerinthus III)

All valid lines of the French Neo-Gnostic restoration trace their origin directly to Jules Doinel. Through his physical consecration of Léonce Fabre des Essarts in 1894, the tactile succession flows downward across Europe and the Caribbean into the Canadian See of Cerinthus:

Historical Abdication & Later Reconciliation

In 1895, caught in the public anti-Masonic tempest orchestrated by the notorious hoaxer Léo Taxil, Doinel temporarily renounced the Gnostic Church and returned to the Roman Catholic faith under the pseudonym Jean Kostka, authoring a sensational polemic titled Lucifer démasqué.

However, when the Taxil scandal was exposed as a complete fabrication at the Paris Geographic Society conference in 1897, Doinel immediately broke his ties with the anti-Masonic movement. He formally reconciled with his Gnostic brethren, was welcomed back with fraternal affection by Patriarch Léonce Fabre des Essarts, and was reinvested as a bishop (Titular Bishop of Alet) within the Holy Synod of the Église Gnostique, serving faithfully in sacramental unity until his repose in 1902.
